If you like museum quality model train layouts, you should probably consider visiting the Chemins de Fer du Kaeserberg Museum in in Granges-Paccot, which is near Fribourg in Switzerland.

The museum features around 2 km of HO 1:87 scale track, run over three levels.

The scene is populated with some 120 trains with 1560 wagons, and around 6,500 people.

The landscaping is modeled for German-speaking Switzerland, with a goal of painting a portrait of everyday life in Switzerland.

Opening Hours for the Chemins de Fer du Kaeserberg

Opening days are predominantly Wednesday and Saturday, with some Fridays and Sundays open as well.

Tours leave every half hour from 10am to 11:30am and from 1pm to 3:30pm, and they have a capacity for 40 people per tour.

You can book ahead or try your luck as a walk in, and groups can arrange a private tour of the Chemins de Fer du Kaeserberg Museum if the Wednesday/Saturday thing it too limiting.

The regular admission fee is CHF 18, and a group of 20 can book a private tour for CHF 600.

The simulator is CHF 465 for three hours with a federal railways engineer instructor.

The museum also features a locomotive simulator, with a real locomotive cab. Once inside you can take control of the locomotive and enjoy the passing landscape on the big screens, for a ‘true to life’ experience.

If you are taking public transport, you can take Bus 9 La Faye from under Fribourg station to the Coteau stop, then a 5 minute walk.

Alternatively Bus 3 Jura from in front of Fribourg station to the Jura Chassotte stop, then a 9 minute walk.
